ICMR to study health impacts of Grass pea

Fifty years after khesari dal (Lathyrus sativus) was banned for sale, the Central government will conduct an epidemiological study of the high-protein legume that can be grown in extreme weather conditions. Khesari dal, also known as Grass pea, was banned for consumption in 1961 as it was believed that Beta-N-Oxalyl-aminoalanine, a neurotoxic amino-acid in the legume, caused neurolathyrim or a paralysis of the lower limbs. It is cultivated extensively in central and western India for cattle fodder. Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and West Bengal are the only States where the sale for human consumption was not banned. Khesari dal is also cheaper than other pulses, whose prices have gone up manifold in the past few years. The withdrawal of the ban will help to solve the shortage of pulses, as it is believed that the harmful effects of khesari dal depends on the amount consumed, its toxin content, the method of cooking and the nutritional status of individuals. Furthermore, the amount of neuro

Akhilesh Yadav seeks three more AIIMS-like institutes in UP

LUCKNOW: After initiating the legwork for opening an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-like institute in Rae Bareilly, the parliamentary constituency of Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh has requested New Delhi to open three more such institutes in the state. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, in a letter to union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, has underlined the need for such multi-speciality hospitals in Poorvanchal, Bundelkhand and Ruhelkhand, citing urgency for quality healthcare facilities for the poor in these backward regions. With an AIIMS-like institute coming up in Rae Bareilly, around 75 km from the state capital, the central region will have a second super-speciality hospital after the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow - while other regions will continue to suffer from lack of proper medicare facilities, the letter points out. Yadav in his letter says that keeping in mind the di

Stroke scales desi avatar at All India Institute of Medical Sciences

NEW DELHI: Two months ago, when Ramesh Chauhan was admitted to AIIMS after a stroke, he underwent a special test -health stroke scale – to measure the level of cognitive deficit he had suffered. He was asked to read English tongue-twisters and recognize pictures of cookie jars, among other objects. A UP-based farmer, Chauhan says he flunked the test not only because of the clots in his brain but also on account of the unfamiliar terms and objects he was asked to identify. Spelling relief for lakhs of patients like Chauhan, who are ill at ease with the English language, doctors at AIIMS have developed a Hindi version of the health stroke scale. It uses objects like balloon, lock, spoon, tiger, bus and telephone – relatively easier to identify – to assess the comprehensive abilities of patients. To check their language skills, simple words in Hindi like ‘namaskar’ and ‘mama’ have been added to the scale. Dr Kameshwar Prasad, head of the neurology department, the brain behind the

Govt plans to increase MBBS seats to 80,000 by 2021

At present there are 41,569 MBBS seats Faced with huge shortage of doctors, the Centre plans to increase the number of medical colleges to have a total of 80,000 MBBS and 45,000 MD seats by 2021. The Union Health Ministry shared its ambitious growth plans with the members of Parliament at a meeting of the consultative committee attached to the ministry. It received a thumbs up from members. India currently has 41569 undergraduate (MBBS) seats and 22194 post graduate seats. Even though there are 7.5 lakh registered doctors, only 5.5 lakh are in active practice. Because of a serious shortage in the number of doctors, the doctor-patient ratio stands at 1: 2000 which the ministry plans to bring down to 1: 1000 by the end of 13th plan period. Eying the 2021 target, the government approved 46 new medical colleges in the last three fiscals – 11 in 2009-10; 14 in 2010-11 and 21 in 2011-12. The trend is likely to continue as the government h

One-year rural posting made mandatory for MBBS students

NEW DELHI: Aspiring doctors will have to spend a year working in rural areas before getting their MBBS degrees, as the government has decided to make rural posting compulsory for them. In a letter to the Medical Council of India (MCI), the Health Ministry has asked its Board of Governors to make rural posting for doctors mandatory and include it in the MBBS course curriculum. Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said doctors will be attached with the Ministry's flagship National Rural Health Mission during the year-long rural posting which will also help improve health care services in villages. Once this proposal becomes part of MBBS curriculum, a medical student, after completing 4.5 years of study and thereafter the hospital internship, will have to undergo a mandatory year-long house job in the form of a rural posting before getting the MBBS degree. Till then, the degree would be provisional. Chairman of MCI Board of Governors K K Talwar told PTI that the one-year

PG Diploma in Clinical Cardiology: Conducted by IGNOU

Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Cardiology (PGDCC) While India has only about 150 positions for training Cardiologists (DM and DNB in Cardiology), less than hundred doctors eventually becomes specialists every year. There is wide gap between availability of cardiology expertise and load of cardiac morbidity in rural as well as urban area. Whatever cardiologists are trained, they are employed / practicing in metropolitan cities or large towns.   This deprives the large population of our country from the cardiology expertise. In India , where 25 percent of the population are living below poverty line (2002) and more than 70 percent of them are living in rural area, most of the trained cardiologist are concentrated in the costly sophisticated tertiary care hospitals which are situated in the urban area. Since high tech hospitals are not only unaffordable but also non-accessible for most of the people of the country.   This Programme will have a great soc

DNB CET July 2012: Some unanswered questions

Natboard issues a new notice on 21 May 2012 about broad specialty CET. Exam in Aug but still there are some questions which are unanswered and bothering the students. Q1. What is the exact date of exam? Q2. What will be the mode of exam - Written or Computer test mode? Q3. If exam is so late when will be the counseling and admissions? Because if NATBOARD takes long time for admission process it will become September and students will be busy with preparation of Nov exams like AIIMS and PGI and even Jan All India. It will also become difficult for students to decide to go for DNB or prepare for Nov/Jan exams. Q4. If June exam is so late when will be the Dec 2012 entrance and whether the exam will be there or will be merged with NEET? Q5. What is final decision on NEET and when will be the exam? Seeing the present state of functioning of natboard, it becomes more and more suspicious that how NBE will be conducting NEET on this large scale without any flaw.  Seeing the probl

Internet Service Providers block torrent sites on HC order

If you've been unable to watch several videos online or access any top torrent file-sharing websites over the last few days, blame it on kolaveri. All of India's major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have blocked access to all leading torrent websites like The Pirate Bay and Torrent Reactor, and even video and link sharing ones like Vimeo, Dailymotion, Pastebin and Xmarks. This is based on a 'John Doe' injunction from the Madras High Court obtained by a film industry outfit in Chennai seeking protection against copyright violations of the Tamil film '3'. The film, somewhat ironically, came to national attention with its internet viral hit 'Why This Kolaveri Di'. But the blocking of websites in India is overseen and handled by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology. Its CERT-IN wing, headed by Gulshan Rai, is tasked with working out the modalities of such action based on specific instructions. When contacted, Rai
