NEET UG: Maharashtra notifies single entrance test for medical, dental courses

PUNE: The state government has formally adopted the Medical Council of India's (MCI) single entrance test plan, called the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG), for admissions to medical and dental courses from academic year (AY) 2013-14.

"We are releasing an official notification today regarding the conduct of NEET-UG in Maharashtra from 2013," state director of medical education and research (DMER) Praveen Shingare told TOI on Wednesday. He ruled out the possibility of the state joining the NEET-UG from 2014 instead of 2013, as was demanded by some Pune-based public organisations and activists.

An estimated 10 lakh students are expected to appear for the maiden NEET-UG, which is to be held on May 5, 2013, for admissions to 355 medical and 29 dental colleges across the country. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the NEET-UG and will prepare a merit list for the respective state authorities.

The Union government has already informed the states that their existing reservation policies would not be disturbed under the NEET-UG plan and state-wise merit lists will be prepared for the respective state authorities.

Shingare said, "The NEET-UG will be mandatory for all those who aspire to join medical and dental courses in the state from AY 2013-14. Even those students, who are aiming for a career in other than medical and dental streams like ayurveda, homeopathy, unani, siddha, nursing and allied sciences, will have to appear for the NEET-UG to secure admission to the respective colleges in the state. There is no point in conducting separate entrance test for streams other than medical and dental."

MCI Relaxes eligibility criteria for Teachers in Medical Colleges

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has relaxed the experience criteria required for teachers taking MBBS classes to be eligible to teach PG students. Earlier, a PG teacher needed to have a total of seven years of experience of which five years were supposed to be as Assistant Professor. The relaxed norms now mandate only a four-year experience as Assistant Professor which means a relaxation of one year. The move is to meet the shortage of PG teachers, said a senior official in the Union Health Ministry. A decision in this regard was taken recently at a meeting of the Board of Governors of the MCI which is an autonomous body under the Health Ministry to regulate the medical education standard in the country. The official explained, “The existing regulations provides that a medical teacher can become postgraduate teacher after eight years of teaching experience out of which five years should be as Assistant Professor. This regulation was made when teaching experience of five y
