The future of over 90,000 doctors across the country lies in jeopardy, even as results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to post-graduation medical courses are delayed for over a month and a half. As per a notification on the official website forNEET-PG, the results were to be declared by January 31. The results had been postponed owing to a pending case in the Supreme Court over the decision to have a common test for admissions.
Most candidates who appeared for the test are now venting their anger on social networking sites. There are sites posting live updates of hearings for students. The case, which was to come up for hearing on Tuesday, has been postponed to March 13. A doctor from Andheri said, "We are clueless about the date of the results. The hearing in the case has been postponed. Ideally, the results are supposed to be out in six weeks after the exam. They can hold admissions, but if results are out, we can at least be convinced about securing seats."
The counselling process for admissions takes over a month, the candidates claimed. The academic session was to begin from May. "Now our children are worried about losing out on the academic year. This is taking pretty long. There are genuine students whose parents would not have enough money to give in donations. The system of having a common test for all institutes is favourable for our children as it will streamline the process. Donations for post-graduation seats run into crores," said a parent.
NEET-PG was conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), New Delhi, last November.
Another candidate said, "The results of DNB (Diplomate of National Board), also conducted by NBE, have also been put on hold to avoid confusion over admissions. DNB is considered equivalent to an MD. Students who have been waiting for DNB results have missed the academic session that was to begin from February 1."
