AHMEDABAD: Students from Gujarat have performed exceptionally well in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in to postgraduate medical courses. More than 30 students from the state have ranked in top 100. Close to 4,500 students from Gujarat appeared for the 1,500 seats in the state. In the entire state maximum number of successful students are from Ahmedabad. What's more, more than 20 students of BJ Medical College have found place in top 100 list. However, students had some anxious moments on Thursday as results were declared in the evening but the website crashed due to heavy rush and students could only came to know about their result late in the night. Most of the toppers belong to non-doctor families. Kewal Kanabar, with all-India eleventh rank, has topped Gujarat's merit list. He is from BJ Medical College. The requirement of teaching faculty in any medical college and other disciplines of medical sciences is determined by the regulations framed by the respective professional Councils. Around 90,000 aspirants took the National Eligibility Entrance Test (Neet), introduced for the first time for the 11,005 postgraduate (PG) degree seats in medical sciences in private and medical colleges in the country between November and December 2012. The results of Neet were due in January this year, but have been held back as directed by the Supreme Court. Neet-PG is a mandatory test for admission to MD/MS/PG diploma. The test was held at 50 centres in 33 cities across the country. The new method of exam was replicated from the IIM model — an "online test" format for the students — that they introduced three years ago. AHMEDABAD: Medicos from Gujarat have taken the lead in starting a movement to protest the delay in declaration of the result of the National Eligibility Entrance Test- Post Graduate (NEET-PG). The students will take out a rally wearing black ribbons and represent their case for early declaration of the result. Students said that the NEET-PG exam was conducted between November 23 and December 6. Over 1.20 lakh medicos who had completed their MBBS appeared in the entrance test for admission in the PG seats. "There are only 5,000 PG seats on medical colleges all over the country for which 1.20 lakh students had appeared for the exam. It has been over five months but the result has not been declared. This has resulted in tremendousmental stress on the medicos," said Dr Shakeel Vadaliwala, president of the national body formed by the medicos to press for their case. New Delhi: Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday said he would ask the Medical Council of India (MCI) to act against PG medical colleges, which have been accepting money to book seats for students even before the medical entrance exam results were declared. His statement came a day after a CNN-IBN sting operation exposed how PG medical college seats were on sale with some being sold for as much as Rs 3 crore. The minister also urged the Supreme Court to take a decision on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) issue soon as it would help solve the problem. The NEET results are likely to be delayed as the MCI on Thursday sought more time from the apex court to make a written submission. The Supreme Court has hinted at considering extension of dateline for admission and interim order could be announced in the next two weeks. AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat University (GU) on Tuesday announced that it has cancelled the local entrance exam for admission in postgraduate medical colleges which was scheduled on April 28. This was after a big number of medical students represented against the exam citing that they had already appeared for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) taken by central agencies and would not like to be burdened by another exam. "The GU has decided to cancel the entrance exam for PG medical seats. The decision of the Supreme Court on the issue will be considered the final word", said officer on special duty (OSD) Arvind Bhandari. The GU on Tuesday saw a deluge of MBBS graduates who gathered at the campus since early morning. One of India’s most ambitious and controversial education reform plans in recent years, to create a single national entrance test for admissions to colleges,   could soon see a quiet, almost unannounced burial . The human resource development (HRD) ministry under MM Pallam Raju has   decided to instead push a more nuanced blueprint for higher education admissions that will continue to allow state governments to conduct entrance tests and will share revenues earned from central tests with them. A day after the state government announced that the Uttar Pradesh Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (UPPGMEE) 2013 cannot be cancelled, medical graduates opposing the exam have decided to go on a protest from Wednesday. The students were demanding cancellation of UPPGMEE on the grounds that they had already taken the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Since both had a similar aim, there was no point taking the other and termed it as wastage of efforts and resources and also met chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to stress their point. Speaking on behalf of other students, Kapil Singh Varma, a student of King George's Medical University (KGMU), said, "The students told the CM that we were left with no other option." The future of over 90,000 doctors across the country lies in jeopardy, even as results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to post-graduation medical courses are delayed for over a month and a half. As per a notification on the official website forNEET-PG, the results were to be declared by January 31. The results had been postponed owing to a pending case in the Supreme Court over the decision to have a common test for admissions. Most candidates who appeared for the test are now venting their anger on social networking sites. There are sites posting live updates of hearings for students. The case, which was to come up for hearing on Tuesday, has been postponed to March 13. A doctor from Andheri said, "We are clueless about the date of the results. Applicability of Neet in Andhra Pradesh  The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is mandatory for admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in all the Government and private medical colleges that come under the ambit of the Indian Medical Council (IMC) Act, 1956. The States of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and UT of Puducherry have requested for exemption from NEET. The States of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have filed writ petitions in the respective High Courts seeking exemption from NEET.
